Palm Harbor boy among Kohl's national winners
Patrick Pedraja, 13, was selected from over 13,000 children to be named as one of the winner of Kohl’s national scholarship prize. Pedraja won a $5,000 scholarship. In addition, Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization of Patrick’s choice. Patrick was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only 10 years old. After finding out about his illness he started the Driving For Donors Program. He traveled with his family to 32 cities across the country in search of people to sign up for bone marrow transplants. Pedraja has signed up over 10,000 people with this program, not to mention raising significant money and awareness. More importantly his efforts have led to three people receiving life saving bone marrow transplants.
Claudine Andrews, Pat’s mother said “This type of awareness has helped to educate so many people who most likely didn’t know anything about the need for marrow donors before. Patrick showed great initiative in this effort by thinking of others instead of himself during a really difficult time in his life.”
