  • Rory's Stance on Prop 2

Four years ago, I moved from New Jersey to California, and I've never
been happier. The food, the people, the weather—it's everything I
dreamed it would be, and more. Don't get me wrong: I'm a proud Jersey
girl, through and through. But there's never been a more exciting time
to be a Californian. One of the measures on the ballot for California
residents is Proposition 2, which proposes more humane treatment of
farm animals who are raised for human consumption.

I'll be honest: I'm a vegan, card-carrying PETA member, and in my
version of a perfect world, everyone else is, too. But you don't have
to be a hippie-dippy, animal rights activist to see why voting YES on
Prop. 2 is the way to go. Right now, calves, pigs, and hens are
confined in cages so small, they cannot even turn around or extend
their limbs. Proposition 2 will simply give these animals a few more
inches of space. Animals raised for food in this country are treated
like commodities, and not the living, feeling beings they are. They
endure the most heinous mistreatment, neglect, abuse, and slaughter.
The very least we can do is allow them enough room to turn around, lie
down, and extend their limbs for their short lives.

Proposition 2 is endorsed by nearly 150 animal protection groups,
including The Humane Society, ASPCA, and Farm Sanctuary; 100 other
nonprofits, like the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Greenpeace,
and the Cesar Chavez Foundation; and over 700 veterinarians, 400
businesses, 100 farmers, 100 religious leaders, and more than 100
elected officials at the federal, local, and state levels.

One of the things I most love about California is how progressive it
is. While many states shy away from change, California is clearly a
trailblazer. And as registered voters, we all have the chance to be
part of history. Whether you love animals or hate them, it is
undeniably cruel to keep them confined in spaces so small that they
can't turn around, lie down, or extend their limbs. Mahatmas Gandhi
said, "You can judge the moral progress of a nation by the way it
treats its animals." We still have a long way to go, but voting YES on
Prop. 2 is a good start.

Thank you Rory for the straight-forward explanation. There is no denying that the current treatment of animals raised for consumption is unacceptable. I'm voting yes on Prop 2!
